Since our article on organic pest control recipes proved to touch on a very common problem, we have prepared a much longer and detailed guide on keeping those bugs away from your innocent plants. It starts with preventive measures and goes on to open warfare. While most of these methods will focus on organic farming ( probably because intensive farming usually involves soaking the land with poison until all the pests are dead ) everyone can benefit from them. Without further ado, here’s the first part of the series.
Cultural Measures
Cultural measures are the actions involving steps taken to make the pests life harder and prevent them from breeding. The point of these measures is not stopping or killing the pests, it is to prevent them from being a problem in the first place by protecting your plants.
First step in the fight against pests is making sure they stay away from your plants. At the start of any production, you must make sure your seeds or young trees are healthy and free of pests. This way you can be sure that your plants will be strong and more likely to resist diseases and pests. And remember to learn about local problems, trying to produce plants sensitive to your location’s problems will be much harder than planting the ones able to resist them.
To prevent the spread of pests from the environment consider planting trees or fences around your organic farming zone, you can use the repellents or insecticides on these to discourage the intruders from entering. You should also closely watch your plants to spot problems early on and get rid of them immediately to keep the spread as low as possible.
Another important measure is collecting the plants as soon as they are harvested. Plant remains are the favorite home of many kinds of pests, keeping them away from the living plants will be beneficial. Also consider creating plant manure from your organic farm waste as this will not only benefit your production but also help keeping the natural cycle, but remember to make sure the fertilizer is free of insects.
Destroying the insect nests or their breeding ground is also very important. Try to find out where the pests are coming from and take action fast, the insects multiply in number really fast if nothing is done about it.Here we conclude the first part of the guide, tomorrow we will give more information about cultural measures.
